Week 1 - FLIP Topic 1 (Quantify & Visualize Data)

We are having a group research the different types of infographics and prepare a presentation slide through google slides. First of all, we researched different types of infographics and list out the application & find some examples for each type and completed a presentation slide.

Exercise 1 - Quantify & Visualize Data
We were assigned a personal task of organizing a group of objects to show their quantity and data. I chose to use a set of glass marbles for the task. There are a total of 20 marbles, and I separate the marbles according to the color of the marbles.

Then I put all the marbles on the paper and list their colors and quantities.

Task 1 - Redesign an infographic poster
We are assigned to get a poorly infographic poster from the internet and redesign it with any online design tools. So firstly, I found a poster that is regarding the topic of 'Food Calories', the design of the poster is too crowded, and the ordering of all elements is complicated and difficult for the reader to understand. In addition, there needs to be more information conveyed in the poster design, with just a lot of images of 'Good' & 'Bad' Calories.

Infographic to Redesign

For online design tools, I choose to use the Canva platform to redesign the poster. In Canva, I found a few templates with color, alignment and elements more suited to redesign. The first template, it has a clean background and a table that is able to make a comparison between the 'Good' & 'Bad' calories. The second template, it has a lovely background and attractive food vector elements around it, also the color selection is very eyes catching. The last template looks elegant and has an aesthetic design thought out the whole poster, with a clear structure easy to receive information well.

Template from Canva

I choose to start the redesign with the second template as the color, and elements all are more aligned with the topic. So first I try to make some changes to the template, I keep the background design and some vectors then I replace all the boxes in the middle with the table idea for the first template to make the classification.

Final Redesigned Infographic

I fill in some information about 'Good' & 'Bad' calories to make the reader understand more. I also got some food elements from the Canva element library to fill up the empty space around and get more attractive.

Rating and review of the Canva design tool

Intuitiveness (3/5)
Canva is super easy to use and learn. It is a very user-friendly interface for first-time users, clean and clear easy to get tools or setting through it. Besides the pros, I think if there is a 'Move tool' that is able for users to move the whole canvas instated of just scrolling up and down or left and right would be more smooth for the design process.

Usefulness (4/5)
Canva is a very useful design platform since it is an online platform users able to access or edit their designs on any device or anywhere. In addition, the Canva library allows the user to get various images, elements, and text designs to apply to their artwork.

Design Template (5/5)
There are tons of templates in Canva, users can get any template regarding posters, banners, booklets, cards, posts, etc. There are various templates, ranging from simple to professional, simplistic to multi-element, to complete the design according to what the user wants.

Week 2 - Flip Topic 2 (L.A.T.C.H)

We are assigned to prepare a presentation slide about the topic of 'L.A.T.C.H'. First of all, we research the topic and find each explanation for Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy. We also find some images as samples to support our explanation. Besides, we created an example of 'L.A.T.C.H' about the "Winder Olympic Sport".

Exercise 2 - L.A.T.C.H
We were assigned to create an infographic poster based on the L.A.T.C.H approach Saul Wurman.

L.A.T.C.H
Location - organizing information based on its location.
Alphabet - organizing the content alphabetically.
Time - organizing information based on time.
Category - organizing information into meaningful groups.
Hierarchy - arranging information by any order (Low to High OR High to Low)

I decided to organize the topic of the type of dinosaur. At first, I put in the information into google sheet to organize it according to the L.A.T.C.H format.

Week 3 - Flip Topic 3 Miller's Law (Chunking)

This week we are tasked to prepare a presentation slide about the topic of Miller's Law (Chunking). We need to explain the topic regarding the best utilization of the 3 techniques and give an example of how it utilizes it.
  • A well-designed infographic
  • UX/UI, Web, App, Games
  • Processes

Week 4 - Flip Topic 4 Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto

We are assigned to present 'Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto' by explaining all of the 9 directives and providing a good & bad example.

Reflection

Experience
FLIP is a different way of learning a new topic. I researched the topic online and talked with my group members to learn more about it. We can find examples that help us understand the topic better.

Observation
Most infographics use one or two of the principles of L.A.T.C.H. (Layout, Accessibility, Tone, Cues, and Hierarchy), but it's not impossible to create an infographic that uses all five principles. In fact, one common thing that all infographics have in common is that they make the information easy to find and understand.

Findings
By doing our own research on FLIP topics, we've learned how to remember and understand the principles and rules more easily. This has helped us create more professional designs, no matter the level of complexity.
