During my diploma study, we were assigned a group final project about making stop-motion animation films. At that time, there was a free rider among my group members. From our discussion, and planning to shoot, he was perfunctory and did not have any contributions made casually, since he didn't contribute, his scope of work requires us to complete. I was in charge of filming at the time, of course, props were needed for the filming, but actually, this part is in order by the person and he didn’t make any progress during the process, even though the props were not prepared. We didn’t find this problem until we were about to start filming, and the deadline was not far away. However, we need to prepare props by ourselves. At that point I had gone into a state of anger and tiredness, feeling empty, mentally drained, and unmotivated. But there is no other way, I still need to stay up all night to take more time to complete it, and there are other projects in progress at that time. Those two to three weeks were the most burnout period of my diploma life.

Project 1

Instructable Infographics Poster

Week 3
We are tasked to create an instructable infographic poster about food recipes by Pasta Grannies. First, we were assigned to look out for one food recipe from Pasta Grannies youtube. I decided to choose the “Classic Tiramisu Dessert".

While watching the video, I wrote down the step and the ingredient needed for poster design and also the infographic animation video.

Recipe Steps & Ingredients

After finishing watching the video, I start to get some research and references to create a moodboard for design inspiration.

Moodboard & Colour theme

Week 4
After collecting all the steps, ingredients and art directions, I started to draft and sketch a few layout ideas from what I got from the moodboard references.

A few basic layout designs

Week 5
After the first attempt showed to Mr.Hafiz for the consult, then I move to the second attempt sketching for more details.

Second attempt at sketching poster design

As the sketching finalize, I start using Ai to vectorize all the graphics and designs. First, I create all the ingredients & materials of the recipe. Then, I start to apply the layout and color theme to the design. Finally, added some of the details and steps.

Final Poster

Feedback
Week 4
Overall, the production process of the page is very detailed, but the order of the steps is not obvious enough.

Week 5
The layout works, but the icon is a little bit small and can try to utilize the negative space.

Motion Graphic Video

Week 4
We were also assigned to make an infographic motion graphic video about our chosen recipes. First of all, I brainstorm some ideas with sketch the storyboard for the scene of the video that will be. And for the color scheme, I choose to use back the color from the poster to make it consistent.

Storyboard (Video scene)

Week 5
After having the layout and finalizing the video scene, I start moving on to Adobe Illustrator to create those graphics and elements for the motion graphic. Also, arrange the composition and separate the layers of the vectors and elements that going to animate.

Week 6
After finishing separating and differentiating all the layers, I start animating in Adobe After Effects. In AE, I animate through the keyframe by moving the object position, scaling the object, the opacity of the object, motion blur and trim path.

After finishing the animation, I added some background music and sound effect to boost the production value and cohesiveness of the video.

Feedback
Week 7
The speed and style are good. The music is nice.
Just minor parts need to be more clear for the viewer to know.

Reflection

Experience
This project was interesting because it was the first time to create an infographic and I also learned about the chunking process. This was a challenge, but I was able to figure out a way to include a video into one poster.

Observation
I noticed that a well-planned margin can help to create a poster with a good flow of information and plenty of white space. This is helpful when there are a lot of elements on a poster and adding borders would make it too crowded.

Findings
An infographic is a type of picture that helps explain information more easily. By using illustrations, we can shorten the length of the original source of information and make the details more easily remembered by the readers. When it comes to information with a lot of steps, using simple step-by-step illustrations with additional details is the most effective way of getting the idea across to the readers.

Project 2

Exercise 3 - Kinetic Typography

Week 1
For this exercise, we are assigned a task about creating a full music kinetic typography animation video. For our group, we decided to use the song "As It Was" by Harry Styles and we divided the parts of the lyrics among each of the members according to the template that Mr. Martin provided to us.

Result of selecting our music

We also assigned individual tasks to research the art direction and some references video to create our mood board in Miro.

Discussion of lyric distribution and art direction

Week 2
After picking our font style and color scheme, I start to draw and sketch a rough idea flow for the part that I'm in charge of. I was distributed to the bridge part of the music.

Storyboard (Bridge Part)

Week 3 - Week 4
Due to the part I take on, the tempo has increased so I decided to go with a quicker motion design by animating the text with the null object, applying a masking effect towards the text and some of the text is replaced by elements.

Feedback
Week3
Mr.Martin mentions that the overall designs are nicely done and he suggested we move some parts that are too close to the edge into the safe margin to make it look more aligned.

Exercise 4 - Animation Chart

Instruction

We were assigned to create an animation chart, which contains Donut Chart, Pie Chart, Bar Chart, and Line Graph. I have been selected under the Donut Chart list. In this project, we created the animation chart through Adobe After Effects. First of all, we were provided a tutorial video by the lecturer about the process of creating the animation.

Tutorial Video

After watching the tutorial video, I start to create the donut chart in AE. First, create a background with an image and attach a shadow fill in front of the image to lower the contrast. After that, I use strokes to create the donut chart and apply color to it. I also apply the trim path effect to make the chart animatic.

Background & Donut Chart

Finally, add in all the details information like titles, labels, and percentages.

Exercise 5 - Vector/Character Animation

Instruction

We are tasked to create the vector and character animation, by using Adobe Illustration to distribute the vector into different layers and for the animation, we used Adobe After Effect to make the movement.

Tutorial Video

Mr.Martin provided us a tutorial video that showed us the step and methods to create the animation. After finishing watching the tutorial video, I start to distribute the vector into different layers in “AI".

Distribute layers in 'AI'

After finishing the arrangement of the layers in 'AI', I start moving to 'AE' to create the animation by importing the 'AI' file and using keyframes to animate it.

Keyframe animation in 'AE'

After the basic movement animation of the vector object, we are required to create more advanced animation which is the 'Wiggle' or 'Puppet position pin tool'. I choose to create the 'Puppet position pin tool' animation. First, double-click into the layer that wants to apply that effect then starts to use the tool to point out all the parts of the character that going to move.

Reflection

Experience
The project was fun and I learned a lot about using the shape path to animate assets. It was time-consuming, but I'm glad the effect worked out. The exercises were interesting and fun to try out new techniques for creating motion graphics. They helped me understand the text animator and how to manipulate the speed between keyframes by adjusting the distance between the keyframe and curve graphs.

Observation
Motion graphics can help make the information shown on a screen more clear and more engaging for viewers, and can also be helpful in making information more memorable. I found that fast-moving transitions work better than slower ones because they don't drag the motion and keep the viewer's attention focused on the screen.

Findings
There are some things in After Effects that don't work the same when they are turned into a shape layer, like vectors that are applied in different colors. Knowing how to use other methods, such as controlling the scale and position keyframes, and masking can help us keep the way we want it. Timing is important when it comes to motion graphics, and if we have the right balance between slow and fast, it can create suspense and captivation in our animation.
