LECTURES
Week 1
Lecture - Mr. Hafiz
Lectures introduce the modules and assessments as well as the Adobe Illustration software. On Adobe AI, we got a tutorial on how to create different shapes by using basic shapes and path tools.

Practical
Bézier Game
Bezier games provide an engaging platform to enhance our pen tool skills while designing, allowing us to navigate through various activities that strengthen our precision and creativity.

Lecture - Ms. Anis
Introduction to Character Design is a fundamental topic that covers several essential principles. These principles include the use of shape, color, emphasis, contrast, harmony, expression/pose, and understanding what makes good character design. By using these principles, character designers can create memorable, iconic characters with unique appearances that stand out and are easily recognizable.

Lecture - Mr. Hafiz
During the course, the instructor demonstrates how to use the Pathfinder and Curvature tools in Adobe Illustrator. The Pathfinder tool allows users to combine, split and trim different shapes to create new and more complex objects. Additionally, the curvature tools in Adobe Illustrator help designers refine and reshape curves and lines with precision, enhancing the overall look and feel of a design.

Week 3
Tutorial - Mr. Hafiz
During this week, we were introduced to concepts such as color matching, swatches, and gradients, which we learned to apply to our designs. Additionally, we were introduced to a shape builder tool that allowed us to combine or cut out shapes as desired.

EXERCISE 1

Exe 1: Vormator Challenge
Before starting my character design sketches, I research character design references that match the specific style and design I want to create. I found out that I will be designing a character based on Ralph from the movie "Ralph Breaks the Internet". The character exudes a strong and intense demeanor due to his well-defined muscular arms and broad shoulders. The expression on his face also showed a sense of toughness and anger.

Fig. 1.1 Ralph Character Research

After conducting some research and looking at various reference characters, I began sketching out different designs with varying shapes, sizes, postures, and styles. My goal was to create a character that conveyed a sense of overbearing strength and anger. Through my research, I discovered that a larger size would help to communicate this sense of strength, while the character's facial expression would indicate their emotional state. Taking this into consideration, I incorporated an emotional facial expression into the character's design to convey their current state. During the sketching process, I faced some challenges because the character design was limited to using the 8 shapes provided. This made it difficult for me to create the exact design in my mind, and I had to make tweaks throughout the process to make it work. However, I try to stay creative and use different combinations of shapes to create the desired look and feel for the character.

Fig. 1.3 Refine Character design

After sketching, I moved on to using Adobe Illustrator to create my character design using the provided shapes. This allowed me to refine the shapes and proportions of the character, as well as experiment with different colors and textures. I found it helpful to continuously refer back to my initial research and references to ensure that the final design aligned with my intended style and emotion.

After finalizing the character's design, I moved on to selecting a color palette that would effectively convey the character's personality traits. I settled on a combination of light blue and dark blue, as these colors were well-suited to capture the character's powerful, aggressive, and determined nature. The red served as the primary color, representing strength and intensity, while the black added a sense of depth and sophistication to the character's appearance. Finally, the blue provided a sense of balance and stability, contrasting with the fiery red and adding a touch of calmness to the character's overall impression. Overall, the chosen color palette successfully complemented the character's design and helped to convey their intended personality traits.

After finalizing the character's design, I moved on to selecting a color palette that would effectively convey the character's personality traits. I settled on a combination of light blue, dark blue, and red as these colors were well-suited to capture the character's powerful, aggressive, and determined nature. The blue color you have used for the character's clothing can represent stability, trust, and intelligence. It can also give off a sense of professionalism and confidence. Finally, the blue provided a sense of balance and stability, contrasting with the fiery red and adding a touch of calmness to the character's overall impression. Overall, the chosen color palette successfully complemented the character's design and helped to convey their intended personality traits.

REFLECTION

Experience
I got the opportunity to attend lectures and participate in practical exercises centered on Adobe Illustrator and character design throughout the first three weeks of the course. These weeks gave me a firm basis in using numerous tools and approaches inside the programme, as well as learning character design fundamentals. I was able to experiment with many design elements, such as designing shapes, utilising route tools, learning colour theory, and improving designs with the Pathfinder and Curvature tools. The practical activities helped me to use what I learned in the lectures and improve my character creation abilities.

Observation
Throughout the training, I realised how important research and reference collection are in the character design process. I obtained great insights into how these features help to portraying various emotions and qualities by observing existing characters and analysing their forms, sizes, postures, and styles. I also realised the importance of colour choices in character design. The colour palette used is critical in portraying the essence of the character and producing a unified and compelling design.

Finding
One of the most important findings from these weeks was the importance of efficiently employing the tools available. The lectures and tutorials on Adobe Illustrator tools such as the Pathfinder, Curvature, and form builder assisted me in understanding how to manipulate and combine shapes to construct complex things and develop designs with accuracy. These tools were really helpful in attaining the intended appearance and feel for the character design. Furthermore, I noticed that paying attention to detail and constantly referring to research and references improves the quality and impact of the final design.
