LECTURES

Week 9 - Light & Shadow

Tutorial - Mr.Hafiz

Fig. 1.0 Victo Ngai Portfolio

During the lecture, the lecturer introduced us to the portfolio of Victor Ngai, showcasing his work as a source of inspiration, references, and ideas for creating texture, backgrounds, and applying light and shadow in illustration design.

Fig. 1.1 Chiaroscuro Exercise

We were also given a practical exercise called the "Chiaroscuro Exercise" to better understand how to create light and shadow in objects or drawings. This exercise allowed us to explore techniques for portraying depth, volume, and three-dimensionality through contrasting light and dark areas in our illustrations.

INSTRUCTION

RESEARCH & INSPIRATION

First of all, we was assigned the “Mytiger” competition instruction of the 12 SDG goals, and we need to pick one or two SDG to design the “Mytiger” illustration poster. So I pick the SDG Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) & 5 (Clean Water & Sanitation).

After chosen this two SDG Goals I having some research on both SDG to understand more and having a better understanding to design the illustration poster.

TASK

Sketch

Fig. 2.0 Sketch Attempt 1

The initial concept revolves around creating a layered background that resembles a cave using paper cutting shapes with different patterns and color tones. The intention is to depict a tiger walking out from the cave. The cave itself incorporates colors representing the water element, which relates to the chosen SDG. Additionally, the background includes various illustrations portraying different activities related to health and well-being that are associated with clean water.
Fig. 2.1 Sketch Attempt 2

To enhance the impact of the illustration poster, I chose to make the main message more prominent. I achieved this by designing an actual man depicted drinking clean water, with all the informational content integrated within the illustration. I maintained the layered design inside the figure to portray the flow of water around the body, while incorporating health and well-being activities that are connected to water. To include the tiger element, I decided to incorporate a distinct section featuring the head of a tiger, which directly conveys the message associated with tigers.

Digitalization
Fig. 2.2 Outline in AI

After completing the sketch, I proceeded to digitize it using Adobe Illustrator. I utilized various tools such as the pen tool, shape tool, and pencil tool to bring the design to life digitally. The pen tool allowed me to create precise and smooth curves, while the shape tool enabled me to construct and manipulate geometric shapes. Additionally, the pencil tool proved useful for adding intricate details and textures to the illustration. These digital tools empowered me to refine and enhance the design, ensuring that it accurately represented my vision.

Fig. 2.3 Applied color

Moving forward, I proceeded to apply colors to the illustration. For the layering water and the background activities, I opted for shades of blue. The layered water elements were represented with a lighter tone of blue, while the background activities were depicted with deeper shades of blue. To make the tiger stand out, I chose a brighter color tone, specifically orange, to add vibrancy and draw attention to the tiger within the composition. By strategically selecting color palettes, I aimed to create visual contrast and effectively convey the intended message of the illustration.

Upon completing the illustration, I noticed that the background had an excessive amount of white space, resulting in a feeling of emptiness.

REFLECTION

Experience
During this period, we engaged in lectures, tutorials, and practical exercises focused on light and shadow in illustrations. The lecturer introduced us to the inspiring portfolio of Victor Ngai, which provided valuable insights into creating texture, backgrounds, and applying light and shadow in our own designs. We also had the opportunity to participate in the "Chiaroscuro Exercise," which deepened our understanding of portraying depth and volume through contrasting light and dark areas.

Observation
Through research and moodboarding, I gained a better understanding of the chosen SDG goals, which were Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) and Clean Water & Sanitation (SDG 5). I observed that incorporating various elements and activities related to these goals would enhance the message and visual impact of the illustration. Additionally, during the digitalization process, I noticed the significance of using tools such as the pen, shape, and pencil tools in Adobe Illustrator to refine the design and add intricate details.

Finding
One significant finding was the importance of color selection in conveying different elements within the illustration. By choosing shades of blue for the water-related elements and a brighter orange for the tiger, I effectively created visual contrast and emphasized the main focal points. Additionally, I discovered the importance of balancing the composition and avoiding excessive white space. Adjustments to the background were necessary to create a more visually engaging and balanced illustration.
